Some of us need a tangible place where our thoughts can reside; a home where they can settle down and exist in black and white. ‘Made Lovely By Sorrow’ is a mirror image of the deepest areas of my soul and a virtual home for my thoughts. It is also a dedication to the life of my mother, who was lost too soon when I was a child. My hope is that I might live my best life, in her honor, for the one that she lost.

The passing of my mother at such an early age, and growing up in a low-income area of Chicago as a Latina child, were the catalysts for my writing pursuits. It is what drives and inspires me to put the virtual pen to paper.  A life of heartache and pain oftentimes breaks a person. For me, it was a catapult towards my love for reading. The escape that books provided me as a child, acted as a salve to nurture my heart. I learned to use words to heal and transform, which cultivated a life of love and beauty.

At age eleven, I was inspired to write poetry and short stories due to the character, Anne, from the book series, “Anne of Green Gables.” This passion for writing followed me into adulthood, and now my inspirations have moved to more sophisticated writers, such as: Sandra Cisneros, Edgar Allen Poe, Pablo Neruda, Jack Kerouac, Bulowski, Hemingway and Sylvia Plath.  This is not an exhaustive list, but certainly the most influential.

Most, if not all, of my work touches on love, loss, trauma, healing, finding oneself and finding a light in this dark world.  Writing is therapeutic, but I also feel it is a way to connect with others who have been through similar experiences, helping them feel less alone in this world.

I feel most at home when I’m creating art, spending time with my incredible son, and sharing my work and story with others. Essentially, my vulnerability in expressing the contents of my heart make up the core of who I am, and I am proud to be able to share it with you.
